This 90 minute workshop will introduce participants to the contemplative wisdom of Howard Thurman. Participants will engage with how Thurman discerns the ways in which the experience of social injustice misshapes our individual and common life. Such malformation of spirit has particular manifestations for the oppressed as well as for those who participate in oppression. In a nation shaped by patterns of injustice, the wisdom of Thurman’s creative encounter with the divine provides a path forward.
Howard Thurman (1899-1981) was one of the most important and influential contemplatives of the 20th Century. He was a mystic, theologian, academic, clergyman and spiritual adviser to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Thurman wrote more than 20 books on theology, religion and philosophy, the most famous being Jesus and the Disinherited (1949).
Workshop Leader: Rev. Christophe D. Ringer PH.D.
Christophe D. Ringer serves as Assistant Professor of Theological Ethics and Society at Chicago Theological Seminary in Chicago. He is passionate about understanding the relationship between self, society and the sacred for human flourishing. Ringer received his Ph.D. in Religion, Ethics and Society from Vanderbilt University. His research interests include African American religion and cultural studies, religion and politics, public theology and social ethics. He is the author of Necropolitics: The Religious Crisis of U.S. Mass Incarceration, which examines the religious meanings that sustain mass incarceration.
